In China, the image of the dragon is closely related to the political regime. In early history the dragon was at first deemed as a medium to communicate between heaven and earth, and later then became a mythical beast and eventually turned into a god. The Dragon God (Longwang or Longshen) was incorporated into national ritual system in the Tang Dynasty, a time when the belief of Dragon God started to thrive in court and popular society. In the Ming Dynasty, however, the cult declined in the state level, and experienced a revival in the Qing Dynasty. In addition to including the Dragon God in the state rituals, emperors of the Qing Dynasty showed their support of the cult by granting titles, repairing old temple, and establishing official Dragon God temples in all provinces. This study uses official documents, edicts, palace memorials and archives to investigate the establishment and management of official Dragon God temples in the capital and provinces during the Qing Dynasty. This study also touches upon the issue of official rainmaking ceremony regarding the regulation and its relation with the cult of Dragon God. By looking into the system and practice of the state cult, this study covers the process and problems of the incorporation and integration of the Dragon God cult into the state ritual system. |
