"Come, come, come to National Taiwan University; go, go, go to the United States." This slogan, frequently heard in the 1970s and 1980s. After all these years, is the "American Dream" still a present tense reality for Taiwanese students? According to the statistics from the Cross-Strait and International Education Division of Taiwan's Ministry of Education, the United States has consistently been the top choice for Taiwanese students studying abroad in the past decade. However, as times change, and despite sharing the same background as Taiwanese students, the domestic political and economic situation presents different challenges, and the landscape of the American Dream has quietly transformed for contemporary Taiwanese dream pursuers. In recent years, Taiwanese youth have been grappling with political turmoil and low wages. As a result, a sense of disillusionment has rapidly spread domestically, labeling this generation as the "weary generation." This term reflects the "generational contradictions" and "generational conflicts" stemming from a rupture in linear time based on the imagined success of economic development. Contemporary America is currently grappling with "opportunity inequality," deviating from the typical American Dream narrative of "if you work hard, you'll have a chance at success." Discussions about the American Dream's challenges emerged during the 2008 financial crisis and the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic. Issues such as unemployment, widening wealth gaps, anti-globalization sentiments, anti-immigrant policies, and even racial discrimination during the pandemic have cast a shadow over the American Dream. How do disillusioned Taiwanese students studying in the United States navigate the challenging job market and what motivates them to pursue the tumultuous American Dream? |
