The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted societies and businesses on a global scale, causing an urgent need for a rapid digitalization effort to adapt to the new normal. This study explores the impact of the pandemic on companies and their digitalization efforts. By investigating the tools, strategies, and outcomes of digitalization initiatives, as well as their potential for long-term digital solutions, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the transformative effects of pandemic as an accelerator of digitalization.
Employing a case study approach, the study conducts interviews with representatives from five companies that successfully navigated the challenges posed by the pandemic. These companies, varying in industry and size, offer a comprehensive perspective on the digitalization changes caused by Covid-19.
The research findings indicate that the resilience of companies during the pandemic correlates with the extent of their prior adoption of digitalization technologies. Businesses that had invested in digital solutions before the outbreak experienced a less profound impact. Digital technologies have emerged as essential tools for maintaining business operations across industries during the crisis. The pandemic has fostered process innovation, leading to improved methods of conducting business and enhancing equipment and operations. Moreover, it has catalyzed the transformation of business models and the creation of new products and values. Significantly, Covid-19 has boosted the adoption of digital technologies within traditional and conservative business environments. The utilization of digital technologies has not only sustained businesses, but positively affected customer experience and employee satisfaction. While the longevity of digital efforts will depend on the leadership and digital capabilities of each company, there is no doubt that one of the most important outcomes of digitalization wave caused by the pandemic is that it created opportunities for young and highly innovative companies to bridge the gap between themselves and larger companies, seizing the moment and establishing a presence on the market.
