dc.description.abstract | Indonesia governments and institutions have distributed and produced genetically modified crops commodities, especially rice crops. The purpose of this study is to observe the consumer’s knowledge and risk perception concerning the mandatory labelling of GMO and non-GMO rice containing and analyze the possible reasons behind the willingness to buy this rice containing in Indonesia. Research was conducted on 1,036 respondents of different socioeconomic levels in Java islands. Consumers were asked about GMO labels, consumer’s knowledge, GMO regulation, government roles, and socio-demographic for genetically modified on rice. The questionnaires were scored using a 5-point Likert scale to determine their answers. These assertions were categorized into five constructs: GMO labels, consumer’s knowledge, GMO regulations, government roles and willingness to buy. This data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modelling and choice experiments. Most of respondents have a limited knowledge about GMO information and regulations in Indonesia, thus, they also rarely saw about GMO symbols and information in public. With regard to their willingness to buy GMO and non-GMO rice, positive effects were observed for government roles and consumer’s knowledge, meanwhile for negative effects were observed for GMO labels and government roles. The effect of the risk perception was moderated by the consumer’s knowledge and GMO labels. These results indicates that consumer’s knowledge and GMO regulations in Indonesia needs to be improved and implemented. Furthermore, for choice experiments, most of the consumers chose baseline option as their highest option. | en |
