This paper develops a unified model in which polarization arises from task-specific technological changes, task demand changes, and structural change. Individuals select a continuum of tasks based on their innate skills, forming an assignment rule. Our findings highlight the importance of each mechanism in determining income and employment distributions by affecting this assignment rule. Following that, we decompose the observed polarization by these driving factors in the United States between 1980 and 2010. Three driving forces have differential impacts on wage and employment distributions. If changes in task demand are included, the optimal tax will be less progressive than scenarios with only task-specific technological changes. |
