| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | On April 16, 1900, Chinese magician Chung Ling Soo amazed the audience at the Alhambra Theatre in London, England, with his legendary "Bowl Production" trick. This performance catapulted him to the forefront of European entertainment, making him one of the most sought-after and highest-paid performing artists on the Europe music hall stages. However, tragedy struck on March 23, 1918, during Chung Ling Soo's "Catching Bullet" trick when a fatal accident occurred, leading to his dramatic on-stage death. His biggest secret was then unveiled that Chung Ling Soo was not Chinese but an entirely disguised American white magician named William Ellsworth Robinson (1861-1918), who had never set foot in China.
Chung Ling Soo was renowned for his oriental persona, but his enduring fame and allure were not solely based on Orientalist performances. It was his unique personal style he exhibited on and off stage, shaping him into a living legend distinct from other performers of his time. This thesis delves into the definition of magic and its distinctive characteristics as a performing art, exploring how magic has managed to find its place amid diverse cultural influences and remains captivating to this day. Simultaneously, the thesis examines the cultural and theatrical contexts of the 19th and 20th centuries in Europe and America, investigating how performers utilized Orientalist presentations to reinterpret exoticism and captivate audiences. Further, the research aims for the cultural bonds between magic and Orientalism and how they molded specific preferences for spectatorship amid the current of time. Magic has often been undervalued as an entertainment category. However, in the early 20th century, Orientalism and magic, intertwined with as a strong magical symbolism, created an unprecedented sensation worldwide through Chung Ling Soo's oriental portrayal. This historical event provides a unique scope of the interaction between magic and the socio-cultural context and its impact on era. | en |
