| zh_TW |
| dc.description.abstract | As of mid-2023, approximately a hundred plant doctors have begun to provide farmers with timely and comprehensive plant care diagnosis services. This marks an important milestone in the history of plant health in Taiwan. However, public understanding of these emerging expert newcomers remains largely confined to policy promotion.
In order to gain a deep understanding of the diagnostic process of plant doctors and their communication with farmers, this study conducted in-depth interviews and field observations with 12 plant doctors and 15 farmers. Using composite narratives, we present the daily routines of plant doctors, with a particular focus on the diagnostic process and the dynamics of "plant doctor-farmer" relationships across different institutions. Furthermore, the process of plant doctors acquiring vernacular expertise was clarified. This involves long-term interaction with the local conditions, the farmers and various external resources, highlighting the importance of field-generated and field-focused knowledge and their interpersonal relationships (puânn-nuá) with farmers. The results offer valuable insights and recommendations for the advancement of the plant doctor policies in Taiwan. | en |
