譚光磊《永恆之王》中譯本之譯註研究與評析

Abstract

本論文之研究文本為特倫斯．韓伯瑞．懷特（T. H. White）所寫的亞瑟王文學重要作品《永恆之王》，透過對比繁體中文譯本之翻譯文字和英文原著內容，進行文本分析及譯註相關的研究問題探討。由於本作的上下冊譯者不同，且第一部曲的中譯本有大量的編者註，因此本研究將取此四部曲小說的第二部《空暗女王》作為研究文本，以排除其他可能影響翻譯決策的因素，將翻譯過程中的考量和決策限定在單一譯者身上。此外，鑒於譚光磊在台灣奇幻文學界的特殊地位，譚氏不僅可謂奇幻文學的推廣者，他同時也為《永恆之王》撰寫導讀（收錄於中譯本中），將研究對象設定在這位不只是譯者的譯者身上，藉此本文也將進一步討論關於譯者之能動性的議題。本研究將以中文譯本的譯註為主體，透過比對原文與譯文進行文本分析，討論譯註在譯文中所盡的功能和產生的效果，並探討促使譯者選擇使用譯註介入文本之原因為何。本研究的文本分析環節主要將建立於筆者的觀察與詮釋，在討論譯註相關議題時將援引譯註研究相關的重要概念和理論，如副文本、厚實翻譯等，剖析並研究譯者翻譯和寫譯註的決策過程，最後評估書中譯註的成效並探討這些譯註可能對讀者造成的正／負面影響。本研究將試圖回答四個核心研究問題：有哪些因素在譯註撰寫的過程中發揮了作用、譯註在翻譯文本中的目的與功能為何、如何評價譯註的效果與影響，以及譯者的能動性如何透過譯註在翻譯文本中被展現。本論文將採以文本分析為主的質性研究方法，並建立評析譯註之功能與效果的有效方法，以探討譯註相關的研究議題。

This thesis adopts the traditional Chinese translation of T. H. White’s important Arthurian novel, The Once and Future King, as the research text to discuss, explore and evaluate the annotations added to the translation by the translator, by comparing the original text and its translation. This thesis would only select footnotes in the second book of this novel, The Queen of Air and Darkness, to make analyses. Chose this specific book is to focus the research on one of the translators of this novel, Gray Tan, and limit the research object to one translator. Tan is not merely the translator of this novel, he is also a promoter of fantasy literature in Taiwan and the writer of the introduction for this novel. Some typical instances of footnotes in the novel will be selected from the text to make analysis and comments to further assess the effect of the translator’s annotations. These examples of the translator’s footnotes would be classified into different groups in terms of their different purposes and functions, and then the original text and its corresponding translation would be juxtaposed in the first place and the footnote added by the translator will be analyzed, and commented on in terms of its information’s accuracy and effectiveness. To sum up, this study adopts qualitative research methods by way of textual analysis and constructs a practical framework for analyzing and evaluating annotations in translation work. This study tries to answer some core research questions: what factors are at play in the annotation-writing process; what are the purposes and functions of annotations in translation works; how to evaluate and assess a translator’s annotation; how translator’s agency is shown in the translated text through annotation. Through this study, I hope to establish a feasible approach to discuss the functions and significance of those annotations written by translators and then further explore relevant issues involving translator’s annotation.
