In this thesis, using Archipelagic as a source, focusing on the works by two female writers Masugi Shizue (1901-1955) and Su Wei-Chen (1954-), who, despite different ages and racial identities, share Taiwanese experiences. This thesis discuss how they create characters’ “double” in their writings and by making characters travelling over the island, construct female subjective awareness and respond to their curiosity for existential meaning. First, this thesis reviews Island studies and archipelagic context of development and clarify how marine framework and thoughts on boundaries expand the existing discourse on “Island closure property”. This discussion is formulated to respond to the concept of Archipelagic: emphasizes the interaction among “island” and “island”. This concept is also in dialogue with “Chronicle of Taiwan island,” which was developed since the end of Martial Law era of Taiwan society. Based on the cognition of archipelagic context, this thesis select Masugi Shizue’s “Enjoined” and “Sayon’s Valley” as research target. These works both take “Taiwan-Japan” as their characters’ moving spaces and rewrite the historical event “Sayon’s Bell,” which happened in 1938. In addition, Su Wei-Chen’s Island of Silence chooses “Taiwan -Hong-Kong” as its characters’ main moving endpoint. This novel won Shi-Pao First Million Literature Award in 1995. This thesis analyzes how these works transform “island Taiwan” into characters’ moving spaces and how the literary strategy “double” provides novelists with a way to conceptualize their Taiwanese experience. In this way, this thesis intends to explore similarities among women’s self-pursuit of different ages and identities. By analyzing the similarities and differences of the two female writers’ writing strategies in their positioning “Taiwan” as moving endpoint, this thesis hopes to construct and promote the dialogical space and function between Taiwanese literature and Archipelagic, also clarifies the role that Taiwan plays in the promotion of Western theories. |
