Nowadays, firms face severe challenges, such as technological revolutions, market fluctuations, political conflict, and climate change. This swiftly transforming economic, social, and environmental milieu poses rigorous tests to corporate sustainability. In recent years, the concept of "sustainable innovation" has garnered significant attention from academics, executives, and policymakers, acting as a cornerstone in facilitating the sustainable progression of organizations. Innovation stands as an essential tool in grappling with economic, societal, and environmental quandaries, prompting an increasing number of companies to channel resources towards sustainable innovation. Such investment aims to generate shared socio-economic value and curtail adverse environmental impacts by pioneering or refining business products, services, processes, procedures, and methodologies.
Accordingly, this study ventures into an examination of whether a firm's digital capabilities and green dynamic capabilities provide a positive driving force for sustainable innovation, thereby enhancing the enterprise's operational, financial, social, and environmental performance. It also explores the role of environmental dynamism within this driving process. Subsequently, six constructs, coupled with control variables encompassing industry, policy, degree of internationalization, and supply chain standards, have been consolidated to finalize the quantitative research model, hypotheses, and questionnaire design. Given that the study encompasses a broad scope of business functions and is keenly focused on progressive innovative development, the target respondents are senior management within enterprises. Data collection is conducted through online surveys. Analysis proceeds with descriptive statistical procedures using Excel and SPSS 25, followed by an evaluation of the measurement and structural models using Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis via SmartPLS 4.
The findings suggest that green dynamic capabilities have a positive and significant impact on sustainable innovation, thereby enhancing corporate performance. Furthermore, environmental dynamism is found to moderate the relationship between green dynamic capabilities and sustainable innovation. However, digital capabilities do not surface as a significant driver of sustainable innovation. As a result, this study suggests that firms should adopt an integrative approach towards their operating constituents and systems, cultivate green dynamic capabilities and direct them towards sustainable innovation to boost business performance, and constantly pay attention to environmental dynamics, adjusting their resource allocation strategies accordingly. The aspiration is for enterprises to continually innovate and sustain their growth amidst challenging circumstances. Furthermore, this research aims to contribute to the maturation of sustainability-focused discourse within academic and industry arenas.
