This thesis proposes a context-aware gait assisted system on the active robotic walker platform. Due to the rapid growth of elderly population proportion in developed countries, caregivers will be very insufficient in the future. Thus, we need gait assisted robotic walkers to help caregivers. Since sometimes Parkinson's disease patients have anomaly gaits while walking, so we take Parkinson's disease patients as our worst case users of the system. Different from traditional robotic walkers, we mount a small laser range finder on the walker to detect user’s gait. By adjusting walker's velocity and prompting user with auditory cues, the walker will help user to stabilize their gaits when they suffering from anomaly gaits. In addition, to navigate safely and to prevent user from making a command mistakenly, we limit the robotic walker’s action according to road conditions which are analyzed by modified Nearness diagram algorithm. The main contribution of this thesis is three-fold. First, this is the first work that proposes a context-aware gait assisted system on the active robotic walker platform. This system can help stabilize the gaits of Parkinson’s disease patients. Second, since the gait data of Parkinson's disease patients are few, and the recognition rate will be low. Thus, we use a user adaptive method to adjust the Hidden Markov Model. To cope with such problem, we invite 7 PD patients to test our system in senior care unit, the experiment results show that when PD patients use this gait assisted system, they have relatively stable gait than without using this system. |
