dc.description.abstractSince 21st century People’s Republic of China has been a popular choice for international companies to transfer their outsourcing into. This study aims to discuss about the opportunities of different Asian countries to challenge a cargo handling solutions company’s - Cargotec Ltd.’s - outsourcing from P.R. of China and the current use as company’s production base. Also it will discuss whether China still maintains the lucrativeness in outsourcing in terms of MacGregor cargo ship-related products.
The study attained is to support and find the answers from both external and internal sources. The quantitative study is based on academical literature completed by the qualitative study, which is carried out by interviewing professional experts in their fields to reach a deeper understanding of the complicated systems behind the market. Furthermore this study has been done in unison with the Foreign trade offices of Finland in India, Philippines, Taiwan and Malaysia.
The study concentrates first to ship building industry and company outlook with bringing in theories from supply chain management and out-sourcing strategy. Later on it will compare the possibilities of Taiwan, India, Philippines and Malaysia as new alternatives to China. Furthermore it looks deeper into the value chain and identifies, analysis and compares the key cost structure factors of the ship building industry production. The findings will show that, even with the fastening inflation and New Labour Law, P.R of China still maintains the cost-beneficial advantages as a sourcing platform, however these advantages might be artificially maintained by the Chinese government, which cannot be maintained in the long term. The countries that could challenge the outsourcing from China are surprisingly two different countries - India and Taiwan. India being a large country with huge undeveloped country with great future potential, and Taiwan being a smaller economy with a ready base for in ship building industry.
