Online community co-governance (OCC) is an important factor affecting members’ community participation, though it remains an under-researched topic. This study reviews extant literature across various disciplines, including law, politics, sociology, psychology, and management, and shows that OCC is characterized by a dyadic (horizontal and vertical) relationship rather than monadic (leader-to-member only) ones. To measure OCC, we first identify its four constituent dimensions (i.e., servant leadership, transparency and comprehensibility of rules, communication openness, and social interactivity). Then, we propose a more holistic framework that incorporates plausible consequents of OCC. Using a survey comprising 616 respondents recruited from well-known online communities and implementing a structural equation modeling approach, we empirically test the hypothesized inter-construct relationships. Our results show that OCC may ultimately lead to online community legitimacy through the mediating effects of members’ perceived trust/justice and online communal orientation. These findings have several implications for theory and practice.en
