統一與分裂之外：古德曼看待中國的方法

Abstract

本文旨在探討澳洲中國學者古德曼的中國學研究，整理其中國學主題可分為三大類：古德曼對於鄧小平生平的研究、中國共產黨推行改革開放的研究，以及省級中國的研究。在鄧小平生平與改革開放的研究中，古德曼強調歷史的連貫性，避免簡化與片段化的分析，在關於省級中國的研究中，則以「省」研究單位，以田野調查的方式力求細緻的研究多元的中國樣貌。本文發現，古德曼的中國研究在注重中國內部的多樣性與在地性。隨著研究成果的累積，在研究單位上繼續往省以下更次一級的單位推展，在議題上的演變上由中央以及對菁英的研究，轉往對中國地方的重視，並且由中國政治經濟社會變遷的研究，往歷史文化認同研究方面轉移。

This thesis aims to explore the China Studies of Australian scholar David S. G. Goodman. Through studying Goodman’s China study, there are three main topics: research of Deng Xiaoping’s life, research about the opening reform policy of Communist Party of China, and the “Provincial China” study. Goodman’s research of Deng and opening reform policy emphasize on historical continuity, avoid simplification and fragmentation. The “Provincial China” study focus on China’s province, and using the approach of field survey to see the diversity of China. What the author found was that Goodman’s China study place importance on the diversity and locality of China. By accumulating the result of research, the scale of research keeps on moving to more local level. Topics of research change from elites of the center to local areas, and change from China's political economic and social changes to historical and cultural identity.
