海洋大陸(Maritime Continent)為全球同等面積降雨最多的區域,雖然部分地區終年降雨不停;但海洋大陸的環流受到亞澳季風的主宰,同時在春、秋,尤其在秋季,當太陽直射赤道,海洋大陸本身為陸地,西邊為印度洋、東邊為太平洋所造成海陸比熱特性就顯現出來,且在秋季近蘇門達臘形成自主的季風系統。
本文研究海洋大陸因地球公轉自轉的天文週期而反映的氣候特徵,以雨量作為依據,區分出下列的氣候分區,以季節而論有:赤道的終年降雨、因地球公轉日照直射北(南)半球循環的夏(冬)季季風降雨型態、秋季季風以及太陽直射赤道每年兩次的半年循環的降雨型態。其中秋季季風為海洋大陸的自主季風,在蘇門達臘以及婆羅洲最為顯著,稱為蘇門達臘季風。
太陽日照因地球自轉每天日昇日落造成日夜變化,也是研究中討論的另一重點,因海洋大陸不同地形:海、陸比熱不同以及高山、平地對於舉升降雨的差異,甚至高山、沿海同時包含比熱以及舉升的不同,對日變化產生的影響;研究中以雲頂溫度表示對流發展程度來探討海洋大陸的日變化,由於地形對於每天週期循環的日變化對流發展,海洋大陸的日變化對流發展在島嶼地形、濱海沿岸地形、以及海上的反應都呈現不同的結果。
