| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study is to examine the association of aggressive behavior (verbal aggression, physical aggression, and property destruction) with the initiative time of tobacco and alcohol use among school children. Data was drawn from 1,486 samples continually followed from 4th-9th grade from the Child and Adolescent Behaviors in Long-term Evolution (CABLE) project. Survival analysis and Lag-time Extend Cox Model were used in the statistical analysis.
We found that the average time of alcohol initiation was earlier than tobacco initiation, and the survival probability of both tobacco and alcohol initiation greatly decreased between 7th -9th grades. After controlling for demographic, psychological and environmental factors, verbal aggression was found to be a significant predictor of both tobacco and alcohol initiation. Besides, property destruction was also related to higher risk of alcohol initiation. However, physical aggression tended not to be related to either tobacco or alcohol initiation. Other influencing factors of tobacco initiation include gender, living area, family structure, father’s education level, prior drinking, parental conflicts, and parental tobacco use. Other influencing factors of alcohol initiation include depression symptoms, prior smoking, and parental alcohol use. Since many children initiate their tobacco and alcohol use early, this bears important implications for early interventions of tobacco and alcohol use among school children. In order to delay tobacco and alcohol initiation, tailored preventive programs were suggested to be designed for children with different types of aggressive behavior. Besides, parents and teachers are encouraged to pay more attention to the children, who have verbal aggression and property destructive behavior. | en |
