| dc.description.abstract | 本論文旨在探討新教傳教士關於中國的理解，及其為預設讀者所建構的中西往來模式，從而審視十九世紀上半葉，中西文化競爭、互動關係。
本文的論點是，傳教士關於中國的理解與論述，既是傳教士對中西往來現實處境的回應，同時，透過書寫與傳播，也影響了實際的中西文化關係。基本上，整篇論文的討論大致依循著兩個線索進行：其一是傳教士從在華的實際活動中，認知、理解中國。但要強調的是，無論傳教士是透過實地觀察或閱讀行為認識中國，他們並非只是被動地承載、反映所處環境的訊息，而是基於預設關懷主觀地詮釋、理解中國。換言之，傳教士不僅是以歐美政治意識、基督教文化價值觀詮釋中國，同時也基於改變中西往來模式、實踐在華傳教目標的現實關懷理解中國。其二是傳教士關於中國的理解，對於傳教策略與實際中西互動關係的影響。雖然傳教士關於中國的理解與論述，未必反映了現實，但透過書寫與《中國叢報》等傳播工具的運用，都形塑了讀者所認知的真實，進而影響實際的中西文化關係。 全文共計四個章節，第一章作為背景，從中西往來、互動模式，討論傳教士如何理解在中國傳教的現實處境，同時採取什麼策略回應之。第二章，探討傳教士基於改變中西互動模式的現實關懷，如何藉由《中國叢報》的傳播作用，形塑西方讀者對中國的理解，與對中西互動模式的認知，進而激勵西方社會參與開放中國門戶，以實踐在華傳教的目標。第三、四章，我把傳教士關於中國的理解，放在中西文化遭逢場域中討論，以考察其對中國的理解與定位，如何影響了傳教士在華實際宣教活動所採行的策略；同時，也將從傳教士採行的策略，檢視中西文化的競爭、互動關係。第三章，討論傳教士從天朝觀的脈絡，理解「夷」字意義，傳教士對「夷」字的理解，藉由《中國叢報》的傳播，建構西方讀者何種對中西互動關係的認知？同時，在面對中國讀者時，傳教士採取何種策略，對抗中國人的天朝觀，以證明外國人在華存在的合理正當性？第四章，考察鴉片戰爭後，在獲得在通商口岸合法傳教的權力後，傳教士在華傳教的情況。本文從傳教士關於God中文譯名之爭論為切入點，嘗試指出鴉片戰爭後，在華傳教活動未必就勢如破竹、風行草偃。 本文關於《中國叢報》的探討，是以該刊為切入點，觀察在傳教士有心操作下，《叢報》所傳遞的中國知識，建構了讀者對中西往來模式的理解，同時，像催化劑般，推進、加速了中西互動關係的轉變。雖然《中國叢報》無法為我們展示讀者想像中國的多元樣貌，但透過將此一刊物放在中西文化互動脈絡下考察，可以讓我們瞭解，作為閱讀中國讀者的傳教士，基於改變在華現實處境的預設關懷而理解出的中國樣貌；另一方面，作為建構者而言，傳教士運用《中國叢報》，形塑讀者對中西文化關係之想像，進而激勵讀者改變實際的中西互動模式。而傳教士在建構各式論述以合理正當化在華傳教活動的過程中，中西關係不見得純然由西方、基督教文化扮演著單向宰制的角色，而中國文化也未必只能被動抵抗，中西文化關係，更多的時候是相互排斥卻又互相滲透、彼此競爭卻又相互依存。 | zh_TW |
