Understanding the effects of Internet Citizens within their government and economy, which will heretofore be referred to as “netizens,” might help foster the positive development of proper usage of social networking on a state level as well as globally. Based on various case studies analyzed within this thesis, the impacts of netizens have been diverse. The level of influence netizens have had on policymaking and the government’s response to various issues represent a strong trend towards cyber leaders in the making. This should be viewed seriously and analyzed in more detail. These cyber leaders are netizens that are able to sway their fellow cyber users. One common consensus that seems to flow through each of the case studies analyzed within this thesis is that a new method of reaching the public exists and a new type of media revolution is present and ever evolving. With this type of influence, the netizens have not only the ability to swing the decisions of their government, but also may have long-lasting effect on the economy.
For the purpose of the scope of this thesis, the analysis will focus solely on the online activities between China and South Korea’s Internet users. These two countries have both strongly influenced the way the Internet is used and how the citizens have been empowered as a result of the easy access to information. On account of the characteristics like the Confucian culture, regime differences, and geographical proximity, these two countries ideally represent two extremes that demand a thorough analysis regarding the command on the empowerment of the Internet for its citizens within the Asian society.
This thesis illustrates that netizens play an important role in the decisions that the government makes and it should be carefully referenced when government officials wish to make changes in policies affecting the local economy and those of its citizens. The presented analysis suggest that this new media will revolutionize the way that the government will try to reach its citizens as well as change the dynamics between the citizens and the global society.
