Abstract
Students in the Asian region, especially Taiwan, have shown an increasing interest in learning Spanish language in recent years. Nonetheless, the lack of attention from Spanish language institutions has not allowed this market to develop its full potential. In this context, the present thesis focuses on Spanish language students in Taiwan and their potential interest to visit Spain to continue their Spanish language studies. This thesis also approaches Spanish language instruction institutions and their intentions for matching the needs of Taiwanese Spanish language students.
This research analyzes the Spanish market supply to understand the industry of Spanish language instruction for foreigners in Spain. To do so this research analyzed data from Spanish language organizations and government institutions aimed at promoting Spanish language and culture around the world. Finally this thesis also inquired Spanish language schools directly interviews looking for answers about promotional initiatives or strategic plans aimed at the Taiwanese market on behalf of Spanish language schools in Spain. Results from the analysis of Spanish language schools show a mismatch between the interest of Spanish schools in the Taiwanese market and the current actions aimed at fulfilling Taiwanese students’ needs.
Another section of this research focused on evaluating the potential demand from Spanish language students in Taiwan. The data collected indicates that Taiwanese Spanish language students’ demand has a relatively high potential and, more importantly, that Spanish language instruction institutions in Spain are mostly unaware or completely uninformed about this potential. The Approach to Taiwanese Spanish language students’ demand side was more direct. This thesis surveyed Spanish language students among the largest categories of students in Taiwan. Results from the survey show that Taiwanese Spanish language students are very interested in Spain as a country and in Spanish language and culture. Furthermore data also shows that Spanish language students are willing to travel to Spain and continue their language studies there.
Key words: Spanish language, language instruction, language instruction institutions, students; motivations
