dc.description.abstract | Abstract
Taiwan is a member of Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN), an association of leading eco-labelling organizations. However, the percentage of hotels that adopt the eco-labels is very low in Taiwan when compared to other developed countries such as Switzerland. This paper attempts to identify the factors that may prevent Taiwanese hoteliers from adopting Taiwan Green Mark. The finding is that eco-label adoption rate may depend on specific details of pertinent environmental conditions. In particular, the presence of or absence of similar established standards has impact on the chances of an eco-label system establishing itself as an industry standard, which in turn influences the hoteliers’ decisions on eco-label adoption. The paper also analyzes the Taiwanese hoteliers’ approach to addressing global trends in sustainability. The author conducted in-depth interviews with a sample of 10 hotels and used grounded theory methodology in this qualitative research. The author seeks to understand managerial perceptions of sustainable hospitality by evaluating their current management practices on the four dimensions of: (1) Sustainability, (2) Economic & Social, (3) Environment, and (4) Cultural & Heritage. The study results indicate that Taiwan hoteliers’ main sustainability initiatives remain focused on environmental dimensions such as water and energy conservation measures and 3R methods (Recycle, Reuse and Reduce). The motivations of hoteliers in Taiwan to adopt sustainable hospitality practices primarily consist of cost savings, compliance, and legitimacy issues in response to government’s environmental impact assessments. | en |
