To adopt robotic technology into commercial service has become a trend in recent years. For example, the adoption of da Vinci robotic surgery is a great example of medical robotic surgery services in Taiwan. In recent years, with breakthroughs in the robotic technologies and large investment by IT companies, the adoption and application of robotic surgery in various field in the health care institutes has became a main stream service. As the cost of robotic surgery becomes cheaper in the incoming years, this novel procedure then can be more widespread and take into routine applications for certain disease conditions. In this study, we took da Vinci Surgical System as an example. We discussed the successful experience in Taipei Medical University Hospital in adopting da Vinci robotic system in the department of obstetrics and gynecology. With the implementation of the system, we discussed current status of da Vinci surgery, and review the pros and cons of this new approach in the medical industry. By case interviews with patients and hospital administrative, and analysis of surgical procedure adoption records, we elucidated the underlying factors contributed to the successful adoption of robotic surgery in Taipei Medical University Hospital. By using the consumer buying decision model, our results demonstrated the factors affecting the successful adoption of the new technology, and the decision-making process of patients (consumers) in choosing the robotic surgery service. We provide this practical case to share our experience to other medical institutes, and hope our results contribute to the future establishment of robotic surgery service in the relative industries or other medical services systems. |
