In recent years, non-invasive aesthetic medical treatments have become one of the major growth drivers of the global aesthetic medicine industry. Market competition has gradually shifted from technological specifications and treatment efficacy toward value proposition development, market perception formation, and adoption mechanisms. However, existing studies primarily focus on clinical outcomes and safety evaluations, while limited attention has been given to how innovative aesthetic medical technologies are understood, accepted, and diffused from an innovation management perspective.
This study adopts EMFACE as a case study to examine the value proposition, market perception, and adoption mechanisms of innovative aesthetic medical technology. It further explores the market introduction strategies and competitive challenges faced by EMFACE in Taiwan’s non-invasive facial rejuvenation market. A qualitative case study approach was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews with aesthetic physicians, consumers, and industry professionals, supplemented by industry reports, academic literature, and market data. The analytical framework integrates Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Consumer Behavior Theory, Brand Positioning Theory, and Value Proposition Theory.
The findings suggest that the market success of innovative aesthetic medical technologies depends not only on technological innovation itself, but also on effective value translation, market perception development, and adoption mechanism design. Unlike established treatment categories that compete within existing consumer demand, EMFACE faces the challenge of category creation and demand generation. The primary barrier is not technological validation but the lack of consumer understanding regarding the concept of muscle-based facial aging. Furthermore, the study identifies a multi-level adoption structure unique to the aesthetic medical industry, where successful diffusion requires acceptance from physicians, effective value translation by consultants, and adoption by consumers.
Based on these findings, this study proposes an “Innovative Aesthetic Medical Technology Adoption Model,” illustrating how technological innovation must progress through value proposition translation, market perception development, professional adoption, and consumer adoption before achieving widespread market diffusion. The study contributes to the literature on innovation diffusion in aesthetic medicine and provides practical implications for aesthetic medical brands, marketing strategy development, and new category introduction.
