This report finds that office workers in various working environments display different behaviors while using Facebook. The reasons why Facebook interests office workers are several, mainly including reducing working stress, enabling them to think, creating topics to chat with colleagues, and letting them simply be themselves. In order to separate work from private life, office workers often decline their colleagues’ and bosses’ invitations of adding them as “Facebook friends.” From the perspective of management, although many companies ban their staff from using Facebook during work time, mid-level managers usually won’t regulate their subordinates with a hard-line attitude. Instead, they trust them and treat them with flexibility, doing their best to make the working division fair. They hope their subordinates could feel a sense of accomplishment at work, and that they could shoulder their own responsibilities and control themselves. Facebook enables office workers to easily interact with friends in various circles and build relationships between colleagues. Moreover, Facebook creates a new behavioral model: pressing “like,” making people feel supported and encouraged. Some people also use Facebook as a tool to promote themselves. However, they are smart enough to use several IDs to protect their own privacy. Seeing that office workers spend too much time on Facebook, managers should reflect on themselves whether there are any problems on work distribution, which impels their subordinates to pursue virtual consolation under high pressure and long working hours. If they are given better working environment, it can not only improve the mood in the office, but help them work with higher efficiency. At the same time, however, this digital, virtual platform may be too convenient for office workers to spend quality time hanging out with friends, making them forget that friendship, after all, needs to be built in the ground of real life. |
