This dissertation investigates how client organizations navigate complexity and realize value in cloud transformation through distinct mechanisms across two critical stages: pre-adoption vendor selection and post-adoption implementation. Drawing from organizational search theory and the attention-based view, the research adopts a mixed-methods design comprising two complementary studies.
Study 1 examines the cloud vendor selection phase and identifies two key informational complexities, cloud service information diversity and cloud system information volume, that hinder client organizations' ability to evaluate vendor fit. Drawing on organizational search theory, the study introduces two distinct search mechanisms: exploratory search for service alignment and diagnostic search for system integration. Qualitative findings from interviews with decision-makers reveal that exploratory search is driven by ambiguity and limited prior experience, supporting learning through broad scanning and collaborative interpretation. In contrast, diagnostic search is triggered during proof-of-concept testing, oriented toward resolving concrete integration issues under time pressure. A follow-up survey with 96 firms confirms that exploratory search facilitates the development of cloud service alignment congruent knowledge, while diagnostic search fosters cloud system integration actionable knowledge. These two forms of knowledge improve decision quality in cloud vendor selection.
Study 2 examines the post-adoption phase of cloud transformation and theorizes attentional engagement as a cross-organizational, domain-specific coordination mechanism. It identifies two configurations of attentional complementarity: client-led executive attention with vendor engagement in cloud service alignment, and vendor-led attentional vigilance with client engagement in cloud system integration. These configurations reflect asymmetrical yet coordinated patterns of attention allocation between clients and vendors, tailored to the distinct demands of service and system domains. A mixed-methods design, combining qualitative interviews and a survey of 97 cloud-adopting firms, confirms that these attentional patterns significantly enhance cloud service quality, system integration quality, and overall operational effectiveness.
The two studies provide a stage-specific framework for understanding cloud transformation. The dissertation advances theoretical insights into cloud computing, organizational learning, and attentional engagement while offering practical guidance on managing complexity and coordination across cloud transformation phases.
