With the development of social robots for the elderly, enhancing the quality of elderly individuals' interactions with robots, and facilitating long-term relationships have become an important issue. Establishing rapport in human-robot interaction can lead to smoother communication, increasing the motivation and willingness to engage. This study aims to design robots with rapport-building characteristics to increase the elderly's acceptance and willingness to interact. Specifically, focusing on how different expressions and inclusiveness displayed by robots influence the rapport-building process with elderly users.
A total of 53 older adults participated. The results showed that elderly individuals could establish rapport with robots through interactive games and perceive different inclusiveness from the robots during the game. The elderly participants demonstrated high engagement and inclusiveness in their interactions. Rapport characteristics, including inclusiveness and positive expressions, were found to enhance the rapport between the elderly and the robots.
This study provides valuable insights for designing robots for elderly care applications. It also provides practical suggestions for designers. Incorporating inclusiveness and positive expressions into robots can increase their acceptance among the elderly, facilitate rapport-building, and enhance the potential for robots to be adopted and utilized within this demographic.
