With the increasing threats to global biodiversity, individuals, communities and organisations are taking conservation measures into their own hands through the creation of private and non-governmental conserved areas, such as nature trusts. However, the varying governance and management of these sites has resulted in varying efficiency of management and conservation. The ‘other effective (area-based) conservation methods’ (OECM) category identifies effective conservation in areas outside of protected areas, like nature trusts, by using eight recognition criteria. This study uses the case of Alibang Ecological Farm in Taiwan, a potential nature trust, to explore how the OECM criteria can be used as a framework to inform trust land management. This study aims to contribute to OECM and nature trust literature in Taiwan, and to the case study’s management. Participant observation, interviews and supplementary documents were used to form a management plan, which was assessed against the OECM criteria. The criteria were also compared to four common issues in nature trust discourse. Criteria 3, 4, 7 and 8, identified areas of improvement for the case study’s management. And the assessment addressed the four issues in nature trust discourse. Financial sustainability was one issue identified for both the case site and nature trust discourse that was not covered in the OECM criteria. Overall, the OECM criteria was identified as a potential tool for nature trusts, particularly those that are new or lack site information, to use as a guide to create effective management plans, or inform existing ones.en
