Song Zelai (1952-) has incorporated a large number of Christian elements into his novels since the 1990s: The City Where the Blood-Red Bats Descended (1996), The Tropical World of Demons (2001), and The Celestial Scroll (2012); this study sets the tone for these novels as "Christian novels", in order to highlight the distinctive creative consciousness of this period that was different from the past, and to strengthen the research perspective on religion which slightly departed from the interpretive discourse such as political criticism or Magic Realism of previous studies. Through the analysis of the their use of Christian elements and rhetoric, this study explains the unique appearance and character of these novels; specially puts emphasis on the recent work The Celestial Scroll, which is regarded as a new milestone in Song Zelai's creation. The objects of this study also include Song Zelai’s novels before his conversion, sinse Song Zelai's Christian concern did not begin after his conversion; in fact, many his earlier works before have already revealed traces and even foreshadowed the development of later creations. His Christian novels also inherited the early period’s style (modernism period, rural realism period, political novel period) and presented as a “gathered masterpiece”. Therefore, the discussion will be conducted in stages to explore the staged changes in Song Zelai's Christian consciousness in the novels, and analyze the causal influence of the works before and after the conversion. Furthermore, this study considers Song Zelai’s novel writing as a practice of Taiwan’s Christian literature. The author's distinctive artistic style of “entering into both divinity and worldliness” has been recognized by the literary world. This study intends to further draw on the history, field , and development of local theology of Christianity in Taiwan to observe how his novel creation combines Christianity and Taiwan, attempting to elaborate on the localized aesthetic characteristics and value of Christian literature in Taiwan. |
