| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | With the advancement of the internet, the use of computers and electronic devices among younger individuals has become increasingly prevalent. Observations in educational settings reveal a growing number of students falling into the trap of excessive internet usage, accom-panied by adverse effects. Past research has suggested that internet usage may serve as a coping mechanism for individuals to fulfill psychological needs or alleviate distress, with choices influenced by emotion and habitual affect regulation tendencies. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate differences in the relationship between alexithymia and internet addiction among Taiwanese students with or without recent life stressors. The study incorporated anx-iety or depressive symptoms and two categories of affect regulation strategies (passive and active) to explore the impact on the pathway predicting internet addiction. Methods: A total of 2007 adolescents aged 12 to 20 completed self-report questionnaires. Using the SPSS 25.0 PROCESS model 6 for serial mediation analysis, the study examined the relationships of alexithymia, anxiety and depression symptoms, active and passive affect regulation strate-gies, and internet addiction. Additionally, the impact of gender and stress status on these pathways was explored. Results: According to the CIAS-10 internet addiction screening cut-off point, the prevalence rate of internet addiction among junior and senior high school students was 17.04%. Of the students without the presence of recent life stressors, alexi-thymia predicted higher internet addiction through the mediation of emotional symptoms (de-pression and anxiety) and passive affect regulation strategies, while active affect regulation strategies did not. Moreover, there existed gender differences: for girls, depressive symptoms and passive affect regulation strategies completely explained the variance in internet addiction predicted by alexithymia. In contrast, for boys, alexithymia predicted internet addiction only through anxiety symptoms and active affect regulation strategies. Discussions and Conclu-sions: For students experiencing stress, especially girls, reducing the use of passive strate-gies may be an effective approach to prevent internet addiction. For boys, interventions should focus on reducing alexithymia by developing their ability to identify and describe emotions. For boys without stress, developing and using more active regulation strategies may be a more effective method to prevent internet addiction. These findings could serve as valuable references for schools in developing Internet addiction prevention and intervention programs tailored to gender differences as well as individuals with or without recent stress. | en |
