More than 60% of enterprises around the globe are family-owned, and family businesses provide more 50% of employment opportunities. In Taiwan, more than 70% of companies are family-owned, and the combined market value of all family businesses make up more than 60% of total market value, showing that family businesses play a critical role both at home and abroad. Over time, the average age of first-generation leaders for many family businesses in Taiwan has reached 50-60 years, and business succession has become an issue of industry-wide concern. Most family businesses in Taiwan expect to pass on the reins to the next generation, but have not formulated a concrete succession plan. This may pose potential problems in future: The average time required to train a successor falls between 5-10 years, so business managers should establish succession plans as soon as possible to avoid succession gaps. This study explores the case of a construction company (Company A) in tandem with the family business map and the twelve critical factors for successful succession in family business to describe the family business succession plan formulated and implemented by the founder of Company A. Study results indicate that academic theories lack consideration of choices made by the next generation; business organization and soundness contributes to the success of business succession; and “digital transformation,” “innovation,” and “sustainability” should also be considered critical factors of successful succession in family business. |
