Building Information Modelling (BIM) has emerged as a significant innovative process in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, providing firms with numerous competitive advantages. However, the full potential of BIM has yet to be realized in Taiwan. Some AEC firms in Taiwan claim their 3D model as a BIM model, indicating a lack of understanding of what a genuine BIM model entails. While there is existing research on BIM adoption and implementation, few studies have investigated the contractor''s perspective. Therefore, this research project aims to investigate the current levels of BIM adoption within the Taiwanese construction industry by gathering insights from construction managers and BIM managers. The study analyzes their perspectives on BIM adoption within their organizations and the broader AEC industry. Six construction companies were selected for in-depth interviews and analysis. The data collected focused on various aspects of BIM adoption, including cost considerations, government support, organizational structure, and collaboration among stakeholders. The findings of this study are categorized into four key factors: Financial, Organizational, Government, and the Implementation processes. It becomes evident that the full utilization of BIM implementation in construction projects has not yet been achieved in Taiwan. However, firms are increasingly investing time and effort in leveraging the collaborative platform provided by BIM. One notable finding is the lack of government support, especially the lack of BIM standards the government upholds. Another issue is the lack of BIM adoption among architects, who ideally should initiate BIM implementation during the design stages and pass the model to contractors for the construction phase. Moreover, some BIM managers express concerns that mandating BIM, given the current level of BIM adoption in Taiwan, could restrict their freedom to independently learn and effectively utilize BIM within their organizations. This research project contributes to the development of effective strategies for promoting and implementing BIM in Taiwan''s construction industry. By addressing the identified challenges and opportunities, this study aims to advance the successful adoption and utilization of BIM in the AEC sector, ultimately improving project outcomes and industry efficiency. |
