The Whistleblower Movement is a movement resisting the Chinese Communist Party launched by Mr. Guo Wengui in 2017. The movement aims to eliminate the Chinese Communist Party and build the New Federal State of China. After several years of development, it not only has the global “Himalaya Farm” volunteer teams covering more than ten countries around the world, but has also achieved outstanding development results by breaking through the CCP’s influence in the fields of social media, cryptocurrency, and music streaming media. The Whistleblower Movement is the first political resistance movement to resist the CCP by using emerging technologies, industries, and modes of communication and collaboration in the digital era. However, there is currently no research on this movement in the academic community. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to observe and analyze this movement. This study focuses on the development practices of the Whistleblower Movement and specifically answers the following three questions: Firstly, how the Whistleblower Movement has mobilized global support groups to produce and communicate live programs on social media platforms. Secondly, what kind of cryptocurrency ecology and business application scenarios has the Whistleblower Movement established. Finally, how the Whistleblower Movement has communicated its ideas through music streaming media and enhanced its attention and appeal. This study refers to resource mobilization theory and political opportunity structure, and then proposes the following two research hypotheses: Hypothesis 1 (resource mobilization theory): The Whistleblower Movement has prompted its support groups to actively form online and offline collective actions by effectively mobilizing and utilizing various resources, and then enhanced the movement’s influence. Hypothesis 2 (political opportunity structure): The strategic developments of the Whistleblower Movement in fields of social media, cryptocurrency, and music streaming media have broken through the restriction of physical national borders and the influence of the CCP, and formed large-scale global communication with typical characteristics of the digital era. This study uses textual analysis and big data analysis to research the Whistleblower Movement’s developments in fields of social media, cryptocurrency, and music streaming media, and confirms the following findings: 1. The Whistleblower Movement has built the social media platform GETTR and organized the global “Himalaya Farm” volunteer teams to produce and broadcast more than tens of thousands of live programs on GETTR platform, to communicate a large amount of information about the movement, and advanced the movement from individual whistleblowing livestreams by Mr. Guo Wengui to vigorous online collective resistance actions. 2. By building the “Himalaya” cryptocurrency ecosystem, the Whistleblower Movement has strengthened the movement's material basis, business ecology, and capital cooperation space. Moreover, the Whistleblower Movement’s original NFT project “Take Down the CCP Badge” has perfectly combined emerging technology, original art and the significance of the times, further strengthening the movement’s community notability. 3. In the field of music streaming media, the “Take Down the CCP Songs” created and released by the Whistleblower Movement have been on the iTunes Store’s sales charts in dozens of countries and regions around the world for a long time, and also broken the best record in Chinese history on the Billboard music charts. They have achieved brilliant communication results, and greatly enhanced the movement’s attention and appeal. 4. Mr. Guo Wengui’s media interviews, whistleblowing livestreams, and press conferences, as well as the founding of the New Federal State of China and the release of the “Declaration of the New Federal State of China” have accumulated moral resources for the movement. The “Himalaya Ecosystem” has expanded commercial resources and capital supports for the movement. The GETTR platform has provided the movement with the infrastructure of social media communication. The Rule of Law Foundation and the Rule of Law Society have provided financial supports for the movement. The global “Himalaya Farm” volunteer teams have provided organizational resources, human resources, and material resources for the movement. The Whistleblower Movement has effectively mobilized and utilized the above various resources, and successfully organized support groups in various countries to hold a large number of online and offline collective actions. Also served as cultural resources self-produced by the movement, the cultural products produced by these collective actions have further enhanced the influence, appeal and cohesion of the Whistleblower Movement, and strengthened the consensus and identification of the movement’s support groups. 5. In the field of social media, the GETTR platform has lowered the threshold and cost of producing and communicating live programs for the movement. The global “Himalaya Farm” volunteer teams has produced and communicated a large number of cultural works on the GETTR platform, breaking through the CCP’s censorship of the movement. In the field of cryptocurrency, the “Himalaya Ecosystem” has brought high-volume capital circulation and open business cooperation ecology to the movement, which are difficult for the CCP to control. The NFT project “Take Down the CCP Badge” has used the censorship resistant and tamperproofing characteristics of blockchain technology to successfully break through the CCP’s influence and spread the movement’s concepts through the public blockchain system and NFT open market. In the field of music streaming media, the “Take Down the CCP Songs” have broken through the CCP’s influence and achieved brilliant release and communication results in dozens of countries and regions around the world, including Hong Kong and Macau which are under the CCP’s control. The Whistleblower Movement’s strategic developments in these three fields has broken through the restriction of national borders and the influence of the CCP, and achieved large-scale global communication. |
