| dc.description.abstract | This thesis delves into the role and impact of political consultancy on the economic performance of local government units (LGUs) in the Philippines, specifically examining the correlation between the engagement of political consultants and the economic prosperity of 149 cities. Through comparative analysis and direct communication with mayors and consultants, the author determines that cities with a political consultant perform better economically and that the core practices align with historical methods. The study also acknowledges the ethical dilemmas and public skepticism that have often accompanied political consultancy. This study contributes to the understanding of political consultancy's potential in young democracies to foster effective local political institutions. It isolates specific elements that could be replicated and tailored to suit other unconsolidated democracies with distinct regional needs. The insights from this study have significant implications for the practice of political consultancy in the Philippines and other developing nations, offering a nuanced perspective on its role in shaping economic growth and governance. The research highlights political consultancy as a strategic tool in local governance, emphasizing its potential to enhance economic performance and contribute to the development of robust democratic institutions. | en |
