dc.description.abstractIn this paper, we present a talent-to-task assignment model that considers the coexistence of automation and endogenous technical changes. Our primary objective is to investigate the repercussions of increased automation accessibility on directed technical change and its consequences on the labor market. We discover that the directed change depends on the value of the elasticity of substitution for the tasks in final goods production. Below the critical value, firms’ research and development (R&D) decisions may contract the range of automation and mitigate polarization. On the other hand, once above that value, firms’ R&D decisions may further expand automation and widen the polarization.en
