This dissertation examines the counter-discourses and literary production of Chinese Cultural Revolution in Taiwan literary field, aiming to sort out how the “decade of calamity” triggered waves of cultural discussions in the literary field of so-called “Free China”. Firstly, I analyze how the discourses of “Chinese Culture” is formed in 1966-1976 to serve as the dominant frame of KMT government’s counter-Cultural Revolution discourses and its potential limitation, observing how such frame is reproduced within the military literary system dominated by the government. Secondly, given the prevalence of “Fukan” (副刊) culture in late 70s, I then focus on analyzing three cultural events relevant to the revolution, led by two mainstream Fukan released in Taiwan, which is 1976’s “Whirlwind of Chen Ruo-Xi”(陳若曦旋風), 1979’s “Special Issue of protest literature”(抗議文學專輯) and 1983’s “the arrival of Wu Ming-Shi”(無名氏來臺), so as to distinguish the negotiation of different forces between governmental/non-governmental position, leftist realism/rightist realism and literature/politics. Lastly, I will turn to examine “the complex of Cultural Revolution” existing in Baodiao Movement(保釣運動) oversea leftist writers. By analyzing their fictional narratives and relevant texts, I would like to argue that there is a mirroring structure between Cultural Revolution and Baodiao Movement. To some extent, the way they see Cultural Revolution is the way they look back upon their Baodiao experience. |
