| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | Since the launch of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations in 2015, Environmental Education (EE) has been widely implemented to improve Environmental Knowledge of the ordinary public and eventually change people’s behaviors for a decline in human environmental impacts. However, EE has yet to be successful in changing human’s behaviors substantively despite the apparent improvement in Environmental Knowledge of the ordinary public.
Consequently, this research highlights zoos as a place for developing an EE based on developing Pro-Environmental Behaviors. Unlike formal education where knowledge transfer is strongly emphasized, zoos potentially have the flexibility to go beyond mere knowledge transfer and stimulate people’s senses, creativity, and empathy for behavioral changes. Specifically, this research aims to investigate how progressive zoos are, and to what extent they are trying to go beyond scientific knowledge transfer and alter people’s behaviors. To do so, two progressive zoos from different regions of the world were chosen: (1) Beauval Zoo (France), and (2) Taipei Zoo (Taiwan, R.O.C). The two places were analyzed through visits of the two zoos, interviews with staff members, and analysis of their educational signs and activities to identify the zoos’ educational philosophies and strategies that potentially promote people’s behavioral change. The results of this research have shown that the two zoos recognize the importance of incorporating a Behavioral Approach in EE and have already used it for their own educational methods. They both adopted strategies that differ from the traditional zoos but also go beyond knowledge transfer. This research also demonstrates that the two institutions have similarities in the ways they build their education; however, they also have diverging points on educational aspects such as human-animal relationships and hierarchy. We thus argue that zoos can significantly contribute to offering an innovative education that would promote Pro-Environmental Behaviors and be shaped by taking into consideration the factors that influence visitors’ mindsets and actions. The literature review of this thesis is showing that such methods have not been sufficiently adopted in formal education. Additionally, very few previous studies have addressed this point, which is a major novelty of this research. Through disseminating the findings, this study contributes to people’s behavioral change for reducing environmental impacts by human society. This is a critical component not only in EE but in the field of sustainability. | en |
