Papaya (Carica papaya) is one of Taiwan's high-value fruits and is classified as an evergreen perennial fruit tree. Fresh papayas are available for purchase throughout the year, and both their consumption and use in various dishes are highly favored by consumers. However, concerns have arisen among consumers about pesticide residues in papayas, as indicated by the Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute of the Council of Agriculture in Taiwan's surveys conducted in 107, 108, and 109 years, where papaya consistently ranked among the top five fruits with pesticide residues exceeding standard limits (Council of Agriculture, Agricultural Chemicals and Toxic Substances Research Institute, Report on Pesticide Residue Monitoring in Fruit Agricultural Products). In response to these concerns, papaya farmers have adhered to the Taiwan Good Agriculture Practice (TGAP) certification, focusing on safety, traceability, and sustainability in papaya cultivation. Furthermore, the government initiated the Sustainable and Good Farmer Award (IPM Award) in 2019 to incentivize farmers and promote the policy of halving pesticide usage. The objective is to encourage the adoption of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques, which allow farmers to gradually reduce pesticide application without compromising their income. This study divided papaya orchards into experimental and control groups. The experimental group employed the IPM approach, while the control group followed traditional farming methods with TGAP certification. By comparing the yield and sale prices of papayas between the two groups, the study aimed to determine the economic benefits of implementing TGAP and IPM practices. The goal was to help papaya farmers understand the impact of IPM techniques on production costs and profits, thereby enhancing the acceptance of IPM practices and aligning with the government's pesticide reduction policy. The overarching aim is to protect Taiwan's agricultural environment and promote sustainable agriculture. The findings of this research can be integrated with smart farming initiatives, enabling farmers to effectively reduce pesticide usage and labor costs, ultimately yielding better economic outcomes in agricultural production. Moreover, this will empower consumers to access safer agricultural products, thereby increasing trust in the agricultural sector. This is the desired outcome of the present study.. |
