Previous studies on the relationship between migratory birds and environmental factors have predominantly focused on breeding season, with limited research on nonbreeding season, particularly for migratory landbirds in East Asia. Previous studies have indicated that migratory landbirds tend to prefer wintering grounds at lower elevations, with lower level of human development, non-forest habitat, higher habitat diversity, warmer temperature, and higher primary productivity. This suggests that the selection of wintering grounds by migratory birds may be influenced by multiple environmental factors. However, few studies have compared the relative importance of different environmental factors, and most studies have focused on a few species at narrow spatiotemporal scales. This study aimed to use data from eBird, a citizen science project, which covers a broader spatiotemporal scale and a greater number of species, to explore the relationship between the abundance and richness ratio of winter migratory landbirds and multiple environmental factors in Taiwan and identify the influential environmental factors. The results revealed that the ratio of wintering migratory landbirds in Taiwan had significantly positive relationship with winter precipitation, temperature, and landcover diversity; while significantly and negatively correlated with the level of human development, forest coverage, and elevation. Notably, winter precipitation and development level were more influential compared to other environmental factors. On the other hand, the ratio of forest wintering species was significantly and positively correlated with forest coverage, while the ratio of non-forest wintering species had a stronger relationship with landcover diversity than the ratio of forest wintering species. While these results generally align with similar studies conducted in other countries, the importance of winter precipitation has not been emphasized in previous studies. Despite the eBird data have some limitations, such as variation in effort and uneven spatial distribution, the extensive amount of eBird data enables researchers to investigate species-environment relationships under broader scales. By using citizen science data, this study provides a preliminary understanding on the relationship between wintering migratory landbirds in Taiwan and various environmental factors. Future research is needed to explore the processes underlying these patterns. |
