| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | Biodiversity in agriculture is suffering around the world- more so in developing sectors. Aid organizations such as the American Peace Corps are interested in contributing to the developing world’s transition from extractive to conservative agricultural practices using volunteers that are embedded in rural communities. This thesis studied the factors that led to success and failure in Peace Corps initiatives in the country of Zambia. Through the use of surveys administered to small scale Zambian farmers, this study gathered data on barriers to implementing biodiversity and existing background knowledge on the village level. This study then compared the findings to interviews of Peace Corp volunteers to determine the intersectionality between farmers' needs and volunteer capability. By analyzing the volunteers' most prominent projects, this study found indicators that are linked to successful and unsuccessful projects. This research found that rural farmers tend to be well acquainted with biodiversity concepts, have a high demand for further projects particularly if they have worked on one before, and are limited more by capital than by knowledge. This paper thus finds that Peace Corp volunteers are most effective when they properly identify the needs of a community, find a committed counterpart, and link that counterpart towards capital assistance. Volunteers also reported that most unsuccessful projects were marred by a lack of this counterpart, and most successful projects had to face lack of funding as their most serious obstacle. In analyzing successful interventions versus failed interventions, this study finds that in a winning scenario Zambia provides the manpower, Peace Corp provides the materials. | en |
