Zhuangzi is a masterpiece of Chinese philosopher Zhuangzhou, which also had an impressive influence on Medieval Japanese literature. Zhuangzi uses many tales and metaphors to explain Zhuangzhou’s philosophy, and some of those were being used in the representative medieval Japanese literature genre, setsuwa collections. Therefore, this study focuses on the contents of Zhuangzi which were being used in the two setsuwa collections Uji shui monogatari and Jikkin sho. The aim of this study is to observe how Zhuangzi contents were mentioned in those setsuwa collections, and to discuss transformation of the related contents of Zhuangzi quoted in Uji shui monogatari and Jikkin sho. The procedures of this study can be divided into three steps. Firstly, chapter one focuses on the Zhuangzi tales which were contained in Uji shui monogatari. By comparing the texts in Uji shui monogatari and Zhuangzi, chapter one considers the difference between the two setsuwa collections, and also analyzes the reason for this. Secondly, chapter two focuses on the Zhuangzi contents which were contained in Jikkin sho with the same method adopted in chapter one. Thirdly, chapter three compares the similar Zhuangzi tales among Uji shui monogatari and other setsuwa collections. Similar Zhuangzi tales among Jikkin sho and other setsuwa collections are also compared in chapter three. The results of the analysis above can be summarized into four points. Firstly, in Uji shui monogatari, the Zhuangzi contents have been revised for the purpose of making the tales more succinct and to the point. Secondly, in Jikkin sho, the Zhuangzi contents were added to supplement the original stories of Jikkin sho, where the main moralization was retained. Thirdly, by analyzing the Zhuangzi contents in Uji shui monogatari and Jikkin sho, we can infer that the difference is due to different compiling purposes. Finally, by analyzing the Zhuangzi contents in Uji shui monogatari and Jikkin sho that are almost taken from Zhuangzi’s outer chapters and miscellaneous chapters, we can understand how Zhuangzi was known and spread in the medieval Japan literature. |
