The strategic position of Kinmen has undergone multiple transitions in its historical development. Its history of co-development with Xiamen has established a foundation of identity for Kinmen citizens that is distinct from the Taiwanese. As a result, on a number of livelihood and economic issues, Kinmen citizens have become more receptive to exchanges and cooperation with Mainland China in comparison to the Taiwanese, resulting in a discrepancy with the mainstream identity of Taiwanese communities. In light of the current relatively indifferent and antagonistic cross-strait relations, the identity of Kinmen citizens, as opposed to their Taiwanese counterparts, and its developmental context are issues warrant further investigation. This study examines the history of Kinmen's development and analyzes the formation of the identity of Kinmen citizens through in-depth interviews conducted with 30 interviewees. This study discovered that the identity of Kinmen citizens consists of identification with Chinese culture, but in terms of political institutions, they identified with the Republic of China (R.O.C.), a political entity characterized by freedom and democracy. To begin with, the nested dyadic exchange relationship between Kinmen, Xiamen, and the R.O.C. has established the foundation of the identity of Kinmen citizens as Chinese, whereas their position at the front line has deepened their sovereign identification with the R.O.C. This study further explores the formation of the identity of Kinmen citizens by attributing four factors: environmental independence, cultural proximity, political dissimilarity, and economic authenticity. In addition, in comparison with Xiamen and Taiwan, Kinmen's long-standing economic stagnation as well as inequality of rights and interests has contributed to a sense of relative deprivation. And lastly, a significant discrepancy between Kinmen citizens' preference for exchanges and cooperation with China and Taiwan's national security concerns has led to a misinterpretation of their identity, which has further undermined opportunities for Kinmen citizens to identify with Taiwan. |
