Background: Current studies have confirmed that peer weight teasing will affect adolescents to develop disordered eating, and many studies have also shown that there are many risk factors affecting adolescents disordered eating. However, the relationship between these factors still needs more research to sort out the possible interaction mechanism. At the same time, since 2012, the Health Promotion Administration has continued to focus on various health behaviors and issues of adolescents in Taiwan with the Taiwan Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS). One of the purposes of this survey is to investigate the co-occurrence of health risk behaviors among the youth population. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the associations between peer weight teasing, social support from friends and family, psychological distress, and disordered eating in middle school students. Based on existing research and buffering hypothesis, we also aimed to clarify whether psychological distress mediates the effect of peer weight teasing on disordered eating, and whether social support from friends and family moderates the relationship between peer weight teasing and psychological distress, and the relationship between peer weight teasing and disordered eating, respectively. Methods: Peer Weight Teasing Experience Scale, Social Support Scale of friends and family, Brief Symptom Rating Scale (BSRS-5), Eating Attitudes Scale (EAT-26), and sociodemographic survey were administrated among 698 junior high school students in Taiwan. Data analysis was performed by using IBM SPSS Statistics (Version 22) for descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and PROCESS macro for SPSS v4.0 statistical software for moderated mediation model analysis. A moderated mediation model was used to explore the mediating role of psychological distress between peer weight teasing and disordered, and whether social support from friends and family members was a protective moderator in the mediating model of peer weight teasing, psychological distress and disordered eating. Results: The results of the study show that peer weight teasing will lead to disordered eating due to the increase of psychological distress. However, peer weight teasing did not directly cause disordered eating, but through fully mediation of psychological distress. In addition, social support from friends significantly moderated the negative effects of peer weight teasing on psychological distress, which means that the social support from friends decrease the harm of peer weight teasing on psychological distress. However, social support from family members did not show significant moderating effect. Therefore, the final research model uses psychological distress as a mediating variable and social support of friends as a moderating variable, forming a final moderating mediation model. Discussion: This study examines the moderating mediation model of peer weight teasing, social support from friends and family, psychological distress and disordered eating in junior high school students. The results between the variables is generally consistent with the previous research, and this study can further understand the mechanism and context of the impact. Suggesting that to prevent adolescents’ disordered eating, we could reduce peer weight teasing and reduce adolescent psychological distress. Moreover, if social support from friends is enhanced, it will be more effective to prevent adolescents’ disordered eating behaviors. |
