Hikikomori, a form of youth social withdrawal, is an emerging issue around the world. It has get the attention of the government in Japan and Hong Kong, and has promoted support of help professionals. However, there is a lack of understanding about hikikomori, so the people and the medias tend to criticize them in Taiwan. This study is based on qualitative approach to collect data, and using in-depth interview with 14 hikikomori. This study intends to explore the pathway of hikikomori, as well as the interaction between hikikomori, their families and the formal support system. The findings indicated: (1) The process of becoming hikikomori and returning to society is tortuous. Youths have been up to their necks in the study, job-searching or work, and has undergone the transition of suspension, graduation or resignation before becoming hikikomori; when they try to get back to school or labour market, they usually face the stress of social expections and peers. (2) During the reclusive period, the health of hikikomori is easily affected by the Internet and 3C products, and their daily lives (division of housework, financial resources) also reflect changes in family interaction. (3) Hikikomori generally have no experience in using a formal support system to help self, which may be due to lack of resource attractiveness or accessibility. (4) Hikikomori is not only the dysfunction of stress coping model, but also a self-protection mechanism that allows them to recover. Based on these findings, there are some suggestions for policy maker, practitioners and research. |
