In our modern society, electronic devices with built in displays are obligatory; constant exposure to these displays means our eyes are under more day to day stress than any time in the past. This phenomenon is known as Digital Eye Strain (DES) and very little is known regarding the long term detrimental effects it may cause but it is a commonly reported issue by ophthalmologists worldwide. Simultaneously, as life expectancy in first world countries increases so too does the rate of reported ocular disease related to aging. According to statistics from 2016, the ophthalmology treatment rate in Teaching Hospitals in Taiwan exceeded that of all other departments. Even with this increase in ocular disease the equipment in most clinics is outdated and unsuited to treat or diagnose disorders stemming from these various causes. The goal of this thesis is to develop and analyze a novel ophthalmic instrument that will facilitate faster and more accurate diagnosis of ocular illnesses. Eye diseases may develop lesions or deformations in different parts of the eye (cornea, lens, retina, sclera, etc.) but this thesis will focus specifically on better detection of retinal damage utilizing a novel fundus capture system we have developed. This new device gives a much larger field of view allowing for better identification of retinal damage compared to currently available commercial fundus camera systems. Our goal is to improve the rate of retinal disease detection through interference-based observation utilizing our novel device allowing clinical ophthalmologists to detect and identify specific retinal diseases immediately. |
