Based on presence/absence distribution data and ecological variables, spatial distribution models of 26 species of amphibians in Taiwan were established using logistic regression and multiple discriminant function. Amphibian distribution data were compiled from the work of Dr.K.L.Lue and Mr. W.H.Chou,and from the literature published between 1979 and 1995. A 2x2 km grid system was used to record the amphibian distribution. Ecological data of elevation, temperature, precipitation, urban development and population density were mapped in a geographic information system (GIS). All the data were processed using ARC/INFO and IDRISI. Statistical analyses were performed in SAS. The ecological variables show significant differences between presence and absence areas for certain species. Logistic regression and multiple discriminant function were used to build the distribution models. Model with optimal predictive power was chosen as the final result. Using the literature database as validation, accuracy of model predictions varied and were above 75% for 14 species, 60?75% for 6 species and 57% for 1 species. The low prediction accuracy for some species may result from recording errors, inappropriate spatial scales, incorrect ecological variables, and data did not meet statistical assumptions. Despite the above limitations, the predictive maps represent the general distribution patterns in Taiwan. These results can be applied in conservation policy making of amphibian, reserve designs, and amphibian population monitoring. |
