Spatial distribution of species is important information for wildlife management and biodiversity conservation. Based on presence/absence distribution data and environmental variables, spatial distribution models of 16 bird species of Timaliinae in Taiwan were established using logistic regression. Bird distribution data were compiled from the literature published between 1978 and 1995. A 2 × 2 km grid system was used to record the bird distribution. The environmental data were mapped in a geographic information system (GIS). The environmental variables show significant differences between presence and absence areas for certain species. The accuracy of prediction varies from 71% to 92%. Based on the predicted distribution models, elevation distribution of birds, gap analysis of existing reserves and simulation of global warming were done. The study suggests that: (1) the available literature data can be used to predict the distribution of Timaliinae in Taiwan by using logistic regression, (2) more information of birds and environmental variables is required to improve the power of distribution models, and (3) spatial analysis using GIS methods can provide valuable insight into the overall patterns of potential distribution of Timaliinae and the results can be applied in conservation policy. |
