Tabular data are common in research. However, it is sometimes difficult to discover the subtle meanings hidden in the tables. It is therefore commonplace to use visualization tools in order to observe the data more effectively. Since different types of visualization may be better suited for different observation purposes of different varieties of data, a programmer of visualization tools usually offer a few choices so that a user can use one that seems to best fit his/her purpose. One important function that has often been ignored is the interaction with tools. This interaction has two aspects. One is the ability of the user to manipulate data and have the result instantly show on the visualization tool. The second is for the tools to synchronize (interaction among tools) once a data modification action is made. There is the additional question of adding a new visualization tool and have it interact with existing ones without any modification to the current environment. To solve these problems, we propose a data interaction model called Shared Model. Shared Model defines a simple format with which tools can interact with each other. Existing tabular data can be made to conform by simply add a header row that specifies the correspondence between its original columns and those required by Shared Model. Each visualization tool can also interact through this format. Thus when a tool developer wishes to add a new tool to the existing tool set, he/she only needs to interact with the standardized format of the table and does not have to notify all existing tools. This not only allows tool developers to great flexibility to add or choose tools to connect with, but also allows data users to do more operations and observations on the tabular data, helping them to explore more issues that cannot be discovered by only using table tools alone. |
