| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | Over 3,000 students graduate from social work department per year in Taiwan; however, not everyone would choose social worker as their first careers. High turnover rate in the career is also a concern in the field. The purpose of this study is to examine what kind of factors would predict career choice goal for being social workers among Taiwanese social work students, based on Lent’s Social Cognitive Career Theory.
In this study, a sample of 1,073 social work undergraduates in 20 universities were interviewed by a structured questionnaire. Five scales of self-efficacy, social support, outcome expectation, career interest, and career choice goal, based on Lent’s theoretical model, were translated, revised, and tested as reliable and valid measures. In model-testing, a path analysis was used to examine the direct, indirect and total ef-fects among variables by using the package of SPSS Amos. The result indicated that Lent’s choice model fit the data well and generally sup-ported the hypotheses. It showed that students’ social support from teachers and peers had direct effect toward their self-efficacy and outcome expectation for being social workers. Also, their self-efficacy and outcome expectations jointly predicted their ca-reer interests and that interests mediate the relations of self-efficacy and outcome ex-pectations to career choice goal. However, students’ self-efficacy, not as Lent’s model hypothesis predicting, only related to career choice goal indirectly, through their out-come expectation and interest, rather than directly. In conclusion, social support and learning experience in school are fundamental for students to develop self-efficacy and outcome expectations, and that outcome ex-pectation and interests are the two major predictors to weather new graduates would choose social work as their career choices. Implications for social work education and social work practice are included. | en |
