| dc.description.abstract | 馬雅各醫生（James Laidlaw Maxwell）為英國基督長老教會第一位來台的傳教士。他從1865年5月至1871年10月進行他的傳教事業。在這六年內馬雅各建立台灣第一棟西醫醫院，也建立英國基督長老會的「台灣傳教中心」（Taiwan Mission）與創建台灣基督長老教會最早的「傳教站」（mission stations），因此馬雅各對台灣基督長老教會最早期的歷史非常重要，但是在台灣長老會發展史的脈絡下，馬雅各通常被當成「緒論」，或被忽略掉，而很少成為研究的主題。因此在台灣長老會歷史中，馬雅各成為較不有名、甚至不為人知的傳教士。
本論文利用馬雅各自己的文字材料，以馬雅各為中心的角度來分析他的早期傳教事業。馬雅各對清代台灣教會而言非常重要，因為他是教會的先驅傳教士，他建立教會的地基。後來的傳教士利用他所建立的教會為基礎，增進了傳教工作。本文首先回顧英國基督長老教會來亞洲的背景，並探討英國長老會在華建立的傳教中心，以及將福音傳播到台灣的歷程，也將討論馬雅各醫生的背景和他何以被任命為英國長老會第一位來台的傳教士。第三章探討馬雅各如何建立「台灣傳教中心」。由於馬雅各的身分為醫生，不是牧師，他的傳教事業跟其他傳教士士不盡相同，第四章則探討馬雅各的傳教方法。 | zh_TW |
| dc.description.abstract | Dr. James Laidlaw Maxwell was the Presbyterian Church of England’s first Taiwan based missionary. He was active from May 1865 to October 1871. In these six years Dr. Maxwell established the first western hospital in Taiwan. He also established the Taiwan Mission and founded the earliest mission stations of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. Dr. Maxwell’s work is therefore very important to the early history of the Church, yet all too often it is reduced to simply a ‘preface’ or is simply missed out altogether and is rarely taken as an area of study. In Church history, Dr. Maxwell is therefore a rather less famous and unknown missionary figure.
This Dissertation makes use of Dr. Maxwell’s personal papers and writings in order to analyze his early missionary work. Dr. Maxwell is very important to the Church in Taiwan, as he was Taiwan’s pioneer missionary. He laid the foundations of the Church upon which later missionaries would build upon. This dissertation will discuss the background of the English Presbyterian Church China Mission and the Church’s reasons for coming to Taiwan. Dr. Maxwell’s personal background will then be discussed together with his reasons for becoming the Church’s first missionary to Taiwan. How Maxwell went about establishing and expanding the Taiwan Mission will then be discussed in detail. Finally, as Maxwell was a trained physician and not a minister, his missionary style was different from that of other missionaries; therefore Dr. Maxwell’s missionary style will be discussed in length. | en |
