Mobile robots meet moving obstacles all the time in real world applications. These include moving humans, vehicles and even other mobile robots. For mobile robots motion planning methods however, many of them only consider moving obstacles as static ones at each control instant which may cause problem. We show this by conducting real world navigation task of a mobile robot, with a software structure based on Robot Operating System. We choose dynamic window approach as the motion planning method. It turns out the robot will take unnecessary extra paths to avoid moving obstacles or even confront moving obstacles. We solve these problems by including dynamic information of moving obstacles into the decision process of motion planning. We developed a object tracking method to obtain these information using 2D LiDARs, which is common sensors among mobile robots. We used Bayesian Optimization to tune parameters involved in the process. After obtaining the dynamic information of moving obstacles, we save them in a costmap representation at each instant to make the robot yield to or not consider confronting moving obstacles depending on the prediction of who shall pass first. We show in both simulated and real test that our method not only save paths or mobile robots in dynamic environments but also keeps them from confronting dynamic obstacles. This especially improves the practicality of mobile robots to share working space with moving humans. |
