| zh_TW |
dc.description.abstract | The rapid rise of economic corridors represents a new approach to integration in non- Western regions that is reshaping global politics on a scale never seen before. Yet, the current literature lacks sufficient theoretical tools to understand the nuances of new regionalism in non- Western contexts, nor the political impact of these economic corridors on integration. This research aims to fill these two theoretical gaps and make a much-needed contribution to the literature by carrying out an instrumental case study of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the most strategically significant corridor of China’s Belt and Road Initiative. It will do so by testing the explanatory power of multilevel governance (MLG) theory toward the political process of CPEC in the provinces of Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. Combining existing concepts in the literature, the author developed the Multilevel Governance Matrix, which revealed that subnational actors in both provinces had a direct impact on economic policy, but could not do the same for policy relating to security or legal issues. This exposes the nature of the impact of scale politics on CPEC and, more broadly, proves the utility of MLG theory for analyzing economic corridors. | en |
